Year 5 pupil breaks record to become youngest-ever chess master (FM)
November 8, 2024

Ethan, one of our talented young chess players, has recently achieved the FIDE Master (FM) title at just nine years old, becoming the youngest-ever to surpass the 2300 rating mark on an official list. This accomplishment also places him as the world’s top player in both the under-nine and under-ten age groups. His success has been recognised nationally, with features in the Financial Times and by the English Chess Federation.

This incredible achievement follows a series of remarkable feats in Ethan’s chess career. Over the past year, he has rapidly progressed through the ranks, achieving new personal bests with each tournament. His rise to the FM title has been marked by impressive performances, including recent wins over several grandmasters at the Vezerkepzo IM tournament in Budapest. Ethan’s dedication has enabled him to accumulate over 100 rating points in just four months – a feat that is remarkable even in the world of competitive chess.

In recognition of Ethan’s incredible rise, Malcolm Pein, Director of International Chess at the English Chess Federation, said, “Ethan has been busy breaking records this year, and this is the icing on the cake. To become a FIDE Master aged just nine is astonishing. Ethan is yet another star rolling off the English Chess Federation’s production line of talented youngsters. We are immensely proud of him. English chess is on the up.”

His success serves as an inspiration to all, and we look forward to supporting Ethan as he continues his promising chess career.
